Car Service Glossary

A plain-language glossary of the terms you'll encounter when booking a Twin Cities private car or MSP airport car service — chauffeur credentials, Meet & Greet, flat-rate pricing, livery insurance, the six fleet vehicle classes, and everything between. If you're comparing Minneapolis car service operators or just trying to understand what's on your booking confirmation, this is the reference.

Chauffeur
A professional driver employed by a private car service company who is trained, background-checked, and licensed to operate commercial passenger vehicles. In Minnesota, operators are subject to commercial-vehicle registration requirements and must carry commercial livery insurance to legally transport passengers for hire.

A chauffeur is distinct from a rideshare driver or a taxi driver — chauffeurs work for a specific private car service company, drive commercially-insured company vehicles, and are trained on corporate presentation standards (dark suit, punctuality, luggage handling, discretion). At MSP Car Service, our background-checked chauffeurs know the routes between downtown Minneapolis, St. Paul, the lake suburbs, and both MSP terminals cold.

Meet & Greet
An optional airport pickup service where your chauffeur waits inside baggage claim holding a name placard (a sign with your name), assists with your luggage, and walks you directly to the vehicle. An alternative to curbside pickup where you meet the chauffeur at the terminal's ground-transportation curb.

At MSP Car Service, Meet & Greet is an add-on service selectable at booking and is available at both Terminal 1–Lindbergh and Terminal 2–Humphrey. Curbside pickup at MSP is standard and included in your flat-rate quote. Meet & Greet is particularly useful for international arrivals, late-night flights with luggage, groups arriving together, first-time visitors to the Twin Cities, or families with kids who want the name-placard handoff.

Flat-rate pricing
A pricing model where your trip cost is quoted upfront at booking and doesn't change based on traffic, wait time, or time-of-day demand. The flat rate is all-inclusive — covering tolls, fuel, and standard wait time. Contrast with metered fares (taxi) or dynamic surge pricing (rideshare).

Flat-rate pricing is the industry standard for legitimate Twin Cities private car operators. If a Minneapolis car service can't quote an all-inclusive flat rate upfront for an MSP airport transfer or a downtown-to-suburb run during a Vikings or Twins game, that's a signal to look elsewhere.

Livery insurance
Commercial vehicle insurance specifically for passenger-for-hire transportation (limo, private car, shuttle, motor coach). Livery insurance provides higher liability coverage than personal auto insurance and is required for legal commercial passenger operation in Minnesota.

Personal auto insurance and most rideshare insurance policies do not cover commercial livery operation. When verifying a Twin Cities car service operator, ask specifically about their commercial livery insurance coverage limits — especially before booking a large group on a Sprinter van, mini coach, or motor coach.

Commercial passenger carrier registration
The state and federal compliance package required to legally operate a private car service or chauffeured transportation business in Minnesota — commercial vehicle registration, commercial livery insurance on file, properly credentialed drivers, and (for vehicles crossing state lines) USDOT/MC registration with the FMCSA.

When verifying a Minnesota chauffeured car service operator, ask about their commercial vehicle registration, commercial livery insurance limits, and (for cross-state or interstate motor coach charters) their USDOT number. These are the actual regulatory requirements — distinct from a personal driver's license.

Premium sedan
A late-model luxury sedan configured for up to 3 passengers with light luggage. The premium sedan is the default vehicle class for solo executives, couples, and airport transfers where a discreet, comfortable ride matters more than seat count.

At MSP Car Service, the premium sedan is the workhorse of our fleet for MSP airport transfers and downtown client pickups. For larger parties or more luggage, step up to the luxury SUV (Escalade-class), stretch limo, Sprinter van, mini coach, or motor coach.

Luxury SUV (Escalade-class)
A full-size luxury SUV — typically a Cadillac Escalade or equivalent — configured for up to 6 passengers with room for several bags. Bridges the gap between a sedan and a van for executive groups, families, and travelers with extra luggage.

The luxury SUV is one of six vehicle classes in the MSP Car Service fleet, alongside the premium sedan, stretch limo, Sprinter van, mini coach, and motor coach. It's a popular choice for MSP airport runs with checked luggage, ski or golf trips, and small VIP groups.

Stretch limousine
A lengthened luxury vehicle with a partition, lounge seating, and ambient lighting, configured for special-occasion group travel. Used for weddings, proms, anniversaries, and milestone celebrations across the Twin Cities.

The stretch limo is the classic choice for celebrations. At MSP Car Service it's chauffeured by a background-checked professional and quoted at an all-inclusive flat or hourly rate — no surge, no surprises.

Sprinter van
An executive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (or equivalent) configured for group transportation — typically 10–14 passengers with generous luggage capacity. Common for corporate teams, family groups, and airport transfers where everyone rides together.

The Sprinter van is ideal for corporate roadshows, wedding-party blocks, and MSP airport transfers for larger groups. It's one of the six MSP Car Service vehicle classes and is quoted upfront at a flat or hourly rate.

Mini coach & motor coach
Larger group-transportation vehicles. A mini coach typically seats around 24–28 passengers; a full motor coach seats up to roughly 56 passengers with under-floor luggage bays, restroom, and reclining seats. Used for conventions, corporate events, weddings, and group tours.

For meetings, conventions at the Minneapolis Convention Center, and large wedding or corporate groups, the mini coach and motor coach round out the MSP Car Service fleet. Capacity, amenities, and routing are confirmed at booking with an all-inclusive flat rate.

Executive black car service
Pre-booked, flat-rate, professionally-chauffeured transportation in a late-model luxury vehicle with tinted privacy windows, leather seating, and discreet corporate-presentation chauffeurs. Distinct from rideshare (which is on-demand, surge-priced, and uses gig-economy drivers in personal vehicles).

At MSP Car Service, executive black car service is delivered in a premium sedan or luxury SUV — quiet cabin, USB charging, bottled water on board, and a chauffeur in corporate attire. The default for MSP airport transfers, downtown client pickups, and discreet executive transportation between hotels and offices in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the southwest metro.

FBO
Fixed Base Operator — a private terminal at an airport serving private jet, charter, and general aviation passengers. Twin Cities–area FBOs include Signature Flight Support and Modern Aviation at MSP, plus FBOs at St. Paul Downtown (STP) and Flying Cloud (FCM) airports. FBOs offer planeside vehicle pickups, private passenger lounges, and direct-to-aircraft ground transportation coordination.

Planeside pickups at FBOs are coordinated with the FBO operator in advance. Your chauffeur meets you at the aircraft (when airport operations permit) rather than at commercial baggage claim — common for executives flying private into the Twin Cities for a corporate meeting, a U.S. Bank Stadium event, or a downtown engagement.

Flight tracking
Real-time monitoring of your commercial flight's status so airport pickup time auto-adjusts to the actual landing time. Standard practice for legitimate Twin Cities private car services — your chauffeur's dispatch receives MSP arrival-time updates automatically and schedules the pickup accordingly without requiring calls on your end.

Flight tracking is included in every MSP Car Service airport booking at no additional charge. If a Minneapolis car service doesn't automatically track flights, that's a significant operational gap — MSP arrival times can shift 15–30 minutes during winter weather, de-icing delays, or summer thunderstorms.

MSP
The IATA airport code for Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, the primary commercial airport for the Twin Cities and the Upper Midwest. MSP has two terminals — Terminal 1–Lindbergh (the main terminal) and Terminal 2–Humphrey — and the 'MSP' code appears on boarding passes, luggage tags, and flight schedules.

MSP sits in Hennepin County between Minneapolis and St. Paul, roughly 12 miles from downtown Minneapolis and 10 miles from downtown St. Paul — typically a 15–25 minute drive off-peak, longer during rush hour or a snow event. Confirm your terminal at booking: most legacy and international carriers use Terminal 1, while several low-cost carriers operate from Terminal 2.

Terminal 1 vs. Terminal 2
MSP's two passenger terminals. Terminal 1–Lindbergh is the larger main terminal serving most legacy, international, and connecting carriers. Terminal 2–Humphrey is the smaller terminal serving several low-cost and charter carriers. They are separate facilities with separate roadways and ground-transportation areas.

Selecting the correct terminal at booking matters — Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have distinct curbs and pickup zones. When you book an MSP transfer, MSP Car Service confirms your terminal so your chauffeur stages at the right ground-transportation area.

Curbside pickup
Airport pickup at the designated ground-transportation curb at your MSP terminal (arrivals level). The standard pickup method included in your flat-rate quote. You walk out of baggage claim, meet your chauffeur and vehicle at the curb, and depart.

Curbside pickup is the default at MSP and is typically the fastest handoff for travelers with carry-on luggage. Meet & Greet (inside baggage claim) is the alternative add-on for situations where the name-placard-and-luggage-assistance handoff is worth selecting — late-night arrivals, larger groups, or first-time Twin Cities visitors.

Point-to-point service
Private transportation quoted as a one-time trip from a specific pickup location to a specific destination, billed at an all-inclusive flat rate. Distinct from hourly service (billed per hour of chauffeur availability) or as-directed packages.

Point-to-point is the most common booking type — MSP airport transfers, restaurant pickups in downtown Minneapolis or the North Loop, single-leg transfers to Rochester for a Mayo Clinic appointment — where a single pickup and single destination are known at booking.

Hourly / as-directed service
Private transportation billed by the hour rather than by trip, with the chauffeur on-call for multiple stops over an extended period. Used for wedding days, corporate roadshows, meetings and events, multi-stop itineraries, or any booking where the chauffeur waits between stops rather than completing a single drop-off.

Hourly service is still flat-rate — the hourly rate is quoted upfront and doesn't surge. Most Twin Cities car services have a minimum booking duration (typically 2–4 hours) for hourly service, particularly during peak windows around major events at U.S. Bank Stadium, Target Center, or the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Mayo Clinic transport
Chauffeured car service between the Twin Cities (or MSP airport) and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota — roughly 90 miles southeast via US-52. A flat-rate, door-to-door alternative to driving or shuttle services for patients, families, and visiting medical professionals.

MSP Car Service offers dedicated Minneapolis-to-Mayo-Clinic and Rochester Mayo Clinic transport, with flight-tracked airport connections and patient-friendly vehicles. The all-inclusive flat rate is quoted upfront so families can plan around appointments without worrying about metered fares or surge pricing.

Corporate account
A pre-established business relationship with a Twin Cities car service operator that provides consolidated monthly invoicing, priority dispatch, dedicated account management, and per-department reporting for companies with recurring private transportation needs. Alternative to ad-hoc per-trip reimbursement through individual expense reports.

For Twin Cities corporations — downtown Minneapolis professional-services firms, the headquarters cluster in Bloomington and Edina, healthcare and med-tech employers, and the corporate campuses across the southwest metro — with 20+ monthly ground-transportation trips, a managed corporate account typically reduces administrative overhead, improves traveler reliability, and provides cleaner budget reconciliation than individual rideshare reimbursements.

Commercial livery
The regulatory category for passenger-for-hire transportation providers (limo companies, private car services, motor coach operators). Commercial livery operations are subject to vehicle inspection, insurance, driver-credentialing, and operational regulations that don't apply to personal-vehicle rideshare operation.
Meet & Greet placard
A printed sign (typically white with black lettering) held by the chauffeur during Meet & Greet inside MSP baggage claim, displaying the lead passenger's name so the passenger can identify the chauffeur quickly. Industry-standard protocol for private car services worldwide.
Priority dispatch
A service feature for corporate accounts where account bookings receive first-available chauffeur matching before ad-hoc retail bookings. Ensures your corporate traveler gets the fastest-available and highest-rated chauffeurs, particularly during peak demand periods (Friday PM, Sunday PM, conventions, and major event weekends in the Twin Cities).
